Pre-Op Checklist: How to Prepare for Surgery

Good preparation lowers your risk of delays, cancellations and complications. Use this step-by-step checklist alongside the exact instructions from your own care team — theirs always come first.

2–4 weeks before

  • Complete pre-op testing (bloodwork, EKG, imaging) your team ordered.
  • Review every medication and supplement with your surgeon or anesthesiologist.
  • Stop smoking or vaping — even a few weeks helps wound healing.
  • Arrange time off work and a ride home for surgery day.
  • Ask about pausing blood thinners, NSAIDs, fish oil and herbal supplements.

1 week before

  • Fill prescriptions you'll need afterward so they're waiting at home.
  • Prepare easy meals and stock fluids, fiber and any recommended supplements.
  • Set up a recovery space: clear walkways, add pillows, put essentials within reach.
  • Confirm arrival time, location and fasting instructions with the surgical office.
  • Arrange help with children, pets and household tasks for the first days.

The day before

  • Follow the exact fasting instructions you were given.
  • Complete any bowel prep or antiseptic (chlorhexidine) shower as instructed.
  • Pack your bag: ID, insurance, medication list, glasses case, loose clothing.
  • Remove nail polish if asked, and skip lotions, creams and makeup.
  • Sleep early — rest supports anesthesia recovery.

The morning of

  • Take only the medications your team approved, with a tiny sip of water.
  • Shower as directed; do not apply deodorant, perfume or lotion.
  • Leave jewelry, piercings and valuables at home.
  • Wear loose clothing and flat shoes that are easy to put back on.
  • Arrive at the time given — being late can push or cancel your procedure.

Common questions about surgery preparation

How long before surgery should I stop eating?

Most care teams ask you to stop solid food about 8 hours before surgery and clear liquids 2 hours before. Always follow the exact fasting times your surgical team gives you, because they vary by procedure and anesthesia type.

Should I stop my regular medications before surgery?

Never stop or change a prescription on your own. Bring a full list of medications, supplements and vitamins to your pre-op appointment. Blood thinners, NSAIDs, some diabetes medicines and certain supplements are often paused several days ahead, but only your team can decide.

What should I bring on the day of surgery?

Photo ID, insurance information, your medication list, a case for glasses or dentures, loose comfortable clothing, and any device chargers. Leave jewelry and valuables at home.

Do I need someone to drive me home?

Yes for almost any procedure with sedation or general anesthesia. Most facilities will cancel your procedure if you do not have a responsible adult to take you home and stay with you for the first several hours.

When should I call my surgeon before the procedure?

Call if you develop a fever, cough, cold, skin infection or rash near the surgical site, if you become pregnant, or if you are unsure whether to take a medication.
